Andhra Pradesh Minister for Health Kamineni Srinivas said that the government is toying with the idea to convert Visakha Institute of Medical Sciences (VIMS) into a premier healthcare and research centre by converting it into a teaching hospital.

Kamineni Srinivas indicated that the State Cabinet would shortly finalize a scheme to develop VIMS on the lines of Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences. He said that VIMS is getting 500 out patients and once the in-patient strength goes, the government may consider appointing doctors on a permanent basis. Once, it was converted into a teaching hospital for Dr.NTR University of Health Sciences, it would get lot of funds to become a premier referral hospital.

VIMS was developed in 110 acres at Health City abutting the NH to serve the patients long ago. It was opened to public last September as the proposal to privatize it last one point of time triggered widespread protests. VIMS has all the super-specialties except cardiac care and surgeries. Plans are afoot to declare it as a super-specialty by introducing cardiac treatment and surgeries.
