AU VC inaugurates lightning sensor

Worldwide Lightning Sensor Blitzortung was inaugurated by AU Vice Chancellor G.Nageswara Rao at the department of Meteorology and Oceanography today.

The instrument detects the occurrence of lightning up to a radial extent of 5,500 km. The programme was initiated under an MoU between the department and the Disaster Prevention Research Institute, Kyoto University, Japan. The Blitzortung sensor, which is the first of its kind in the country is installed by a group of scientists from Japan.
