Visakhapatnam

Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) Commissioner M.Hari Narayanan gave away 15 e-bikes to the sanitary staff as part of the smart city initiative.

The bikes will be used by sanitary inspectors and maistries for supervision of sanitary work in the wards. Each bike costs Rs.23,000. An order has been placed for 100 bikes and 50 received so far.

Initially, they will be deployed in the area selected for the development in the Smart City challenge as part of area based development plan. The 10 e-bikes would be made available to people at Ramakrishna Beach. The battery operated bikes were formally inaugurated by Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu during his visit recently.

The bikes fitted with bags will go around the main roads and clear the litter. Initially, workers will be given the e-bikes to clean up 10 areas according to sources. The bikes will be kept on pay-and-use basis at Ramakrishna Beach. With the cycling tracks proposed as a part of the Smart City initiative, officials hope cycling will catch up as an environment-friendly transport mode.
