Former TDP MLA Chengala Venkata Rao sentenced life term in a murder case

The X Additional District Sessions Judge B.B.Nageswara Rao at Anakapalle today sentenced life imprisonment to former Payakaraopeta MLA Chengala Venkata Rao and 24 others life term in a rioting and murder case.

The murder case was booked against them in connection with a violent clash in which a fisherman died and eight others grievously injured on October 18, 2007. According to sources, groups of people from Bangarampalem village in Nakkapalli mandal clashed with one supporting the establishment of beach sand mining unit and another opposing it. The scene turned riotous after Chengala Venkata Rao and his followers reached the village and a violent clash erupted. He supported the group that stood against mining.

Additional Public Prosecutor K.P.Naidu said the case was investigated by the then Inspector of Police of Payakaraopeta P.Rajendra Kumar. Among the 24 others who were sentenced K.Appalaraju, K.Demudu ad Babu Rao had died during the course of the ten year trial. Three are women. Apart from the term sentence, six of them including Venkata Rao will have to undergo one-year rigorous imprisonment.
