State government plans to set up a special task force to deal with drug abuse

Minister for HRD Ganta Srinivasa Rao said that the State government is contemplating constitution a special task force comprising officials from all drug enforcement departments to check drug abuse.

He said that the special task force would comprise of departments such as Prohibition and Excise, Police and Drug Inspection. A decision to this effect has been taken after a high level meeting and keeping in view the drugs scandal business in Hyderabad. He announced of the same after a meeting with the school managements on Sunday.

He said the government is planning to pass a few legislations to give more teeth to the NDPS Act. This will be discussed at the next Cabinet meeting. The aim is to see that peddlers and smugglers are booked under sections that are non-bailable. The could act as a deterrent, he said.

In the meeting, the Minister advised them to install more CCTV cameras at vital locations and organize parent-teacher meetings. Teachers were asked to closely monitor the behavioral change of students. All addicts develop behavioral changes and it is the responsibility of the teachers and the parents to observe such changes and take immediate steps. He asked the managements of the schools to hold awareness’ meetings.
