AP Minister for HRD Ganta Srinivasa Rao visited contract teachers who have been on an indefinite relay hunger strike outside the main gate of the university for the last 25 days demanding job security and implementation of ‘equal pay for equal work’ as per the Apex court guidelines.

Zulfiqar Ali of Andhra University Contract Teachers Association said that the Minister assured to provide job security and look into the matter and will resume if the demands are not met within 20 days. The contract techers who have been recruited by the University in 2005 for ad hoc pay of Rs.6,000 per month now gone up to Rs.28,000 have been staging dharna after the government decided to recruit new teachers without giving any weightage to the serving contract teachers. The agitation has been across the State in all the 14 state run universities.

The contract teachers urged the Minister not to follow the roster system as it might spoil their chances. The contract teachers also faulted the rationalisation committee that was constituted to assess the recruitment of teachers in each department.
