Vakapalli case committed to special court in Visakhapatnam

The 13 police personnel accused of gang raping 11 Adivasi women in Vakapalli were today summoned by the Magisterial Court in Paderu. The case was committed to the special court constituted to handle cases under SC/ST Atrocities Act in Visakhapatnam as the Magisterial Court did not have the power to handle such cases. It may be recalled that on August 20, 2007, 11 Adivasi women of Vakapalli village in Nurmati panchayat of G.Madugula mandal had allegedly been gang-raped by personnel of the Greyhounds. The trial had not begun since then. Though the Paderu court accepted a private petition filed by the victims in August 2008, the accused had approached the High Court and obtained a stay. Though the stay was quashed on April 26, 2012, the accused approached the Supreme Court and obtained a stay which was vacated on September 1, 2017.
