GVMC proposes new categories for water tariff

Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation has planned to convert non-commercial supply to commercial supply by including new categories and increased the water tariff.

According to sources, the new categories proposed to be introduced are commercial, institutional and industrial. There are several house service connections in below poverty line, general and other categories. As of now, GVMC has HSC, bulk and semi-bulk connection categories. The connection now proposed to be brought under the new categories are paying property tx under commercial category but water tax under HSC.

It now proposes to bring them under category in view of the use for non-domestic purposes. For half-inch HSC the present tariff is Rs.120 and for three-fourths inch Rs.160 per month. GVMC now proposes to increase it to Rs.480 and Rs.740 respectively. The Council Resolution had been obtained for the introduction of new categories. GVMC has invited objections from general public on the proposal which should be conveyed by August 22.

As of now, there are 1.99 lakh HSCs of which 70,143 are BPL connections. It is estimated that at least 10,000 HSCs fall under three categories proposed to be introduced.
