Gold seizure at Visakhapatnam Airport

The Customs officials at Visakhapatnam Airport have apprehended a person identified as Lathief Veerankunhi, a native of Kerala who allegedly tried to smuggle gold.

The officials have seized gold worth 350 gm valued at Rs.10.6 lakh market value and imported cigarettes worth Rs.16,800. The accused had travelled to Dubai where he allegedly purchased the gold and landed here today morning via Colombo by Sri Lankan Airlines flight.

Based on Air Intelligence wing inputs, the officials intercepted the accused at Green Channel. When he was questioned, he stated that he wat not carrying any dutiable goods but on search, 14 packets of cigarettes which was more than the permissible limit. Not satisfied with the search, the officials continued their operation and the cover of the suitcase was harder than the usual one. On cutting open the cover, black colour adhesive taped metal object sheets were found concealed in layers. The customs officials recovered about three such sheets that weighed around 350 gm of gold.

It may be recalled that on Sunday, the customs officials detained a Sri Lankan national Abdul Razak Mohammed Ziyard at the Green Channel and recovered 18 gold biscuits from him.
