City chess players win medals at Commonwealth meet

M.Sahithi Varshini has brought laurels to the city by winning gold medal in the under -10 category at the Commonwealth Chess Championship, held in Delhi recently. Sahithi secured six points in several rounds with five wins and two draws and remained unbeaten in the tournament. In the under 16 category, V.Thosali bagged bronze medal.

Municipal workers’ three-day strike beings

GVMC contract Workers’ Union affiliated to CITU leading a three-day strike of contact and outsourced municipal workers demanding cancellation of GO 279 claimed that the strike on Tuesday was a success in the 72 wards of GVMC and Anakapalle and Bheemunipatnam. Municipal Commissioner M.Hari Narayanan asked officials to make alternative arrangements employing workers and making full use of regular workers.

Yamini Krishnamurthy to be honored

A week-long annual music, dance and drama festival will be organized by Visakha Music and Dance Academy from August 12. ‘Natya Vidya Bharati’ tittle will be conferred on classical dancer Yamini Krishnamurthy on the inaugural day of the festival. She will receive the award from president of Madras Music Academy N.Murali according to trustee and secretary of the academy G.R.K.Prasad.

CBI traps Insurance official

CBI officials laid a trap and caught Kola Rama Narasimham, development officer, micro office, United India Insurance Company Ltd., Kandukuru branch, Prakasam district while he was allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs.10,000 from a complainant on Tuesday. The complainant submitted a claim of Rs.50,000 and to forward it to the concerned, the accused demand the bribe.

Malaria drugs distributed

Drugs for malaria treatment were given away in wards 22,27,28 and 29 based on the information received by Zone Three Commissioner V.Chakradhara Rao. Spraying and fogging was conducted in the area according to an official release. Steps for anti-larvae will be taken if information on incidence of fevers is passed on to 1800-4250-0009.

Vanamahotsavam held at school

A week-long programme on environment awareness was held as a part of 'Vanamahotsavam' at Little Angels School, Ukkunagaram. As a part of the programme, Class IX students made seed balls using seeds and soil and distributed them to residents of the neighborhood. Students also took part in the poster making contest that focused on the theme 'Trees- a natural umbrella for us'. Saplings were planted on the school premises.

Investiture ceremony

Investiture ceremony was held at Ravindra Bharati School, Dwarakanagar. Circle Inspector M.Rambabu who was the chief guest distributed badges to the elected members. Later, he urged the students to stay away from substance abuse and contribute to traffic discipline.

Free training in Auto Cad video editing

The Mission for Elimination of Poverty in Municipal Areas is organizing a free training programme for 120 students in Auto-CAD and HD video editing at Millennium Software Solutions Private Ltd., Dwarakanagar. Those aged between 18 to 30 years and with an annual income below Rs.1 lakh are eligible.

Last date for Ph.D applications extended to July 17

Andhra University has extended the last date for submission of applications for undergoing Ph.D by July 17. Students can apply up to July 24 with a late fee of Rs.1,000, and up to July 31 with a late fee of Rs.3,000 and up to August 8 with a late fee of Rs.5,000 said a press release.
