World Bank sanctions Rs.68 crore for high tech nurseries

With the World Bank funded AP Disaster Recovery Project, the Forest department is planning to develop four high-tech nurseries one each in Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram, Srikakulam and East Godavari districts.

This is the first of its kind initiative in the State. 40 nurseries will be developed in the four districts within the next one year. The World Bank has sanctioned rs.68 crore for the implementation of the projects. A meeting between the Forest Department and a 11 member World Bank team on visit to the city to review the progress of the projects was held on Tuesday.

Chief Conservator of Forest Rahul Pandy said that the Detailed Project Report for the high-tech nurseries is under preparation and will be completed by November 10 and the work will commence from December. The nurseries will have a mist chamber, compost units, interpretation centre, meeting hall and training facilities. He said that in the first phase, 20 nurseries are being developed at a cost of Rs.15 lakh and the remaining 20 will come up in the next year.

As part of the livelihood project, 1,345 hectares of shelter belts in these four districts is being developed of which 470 hectares have already been completed. A two km avenue planation project in the villages located along the coast will be taken up.
