Abolish capital punishment, says HRF member Nageswara Rao

Siva Nageswara Rao, Advocate and executive member of Human Rights Forum speaking at a seminar on ‘Abolishment of capital punishment’ organized by HRF demanded that it should be abolished.

Quoting justice P.N.Bhagwati, Nageswara Rao pointed out that the justice had clearly statement that there was no legislative guidelines on ‘rarest of rare cases’ and ‘the poor are handed over the capital punishment when compared to the rich and powerful.

He said that a survey conducted by Human Rights organizations, 80 per cent of capital punishment sentences were handed over to those from the poor segment of SC/ST and Backward Classes. He said that death sentence cannot be deterrent to heinous crime.
