GO No.279 - Sanitation workers threaten for indefinite strike

The GVMC Contract Workers’ Union today staged a dharna at the Corporation and ward offices demanding cancellation of G.O.No.279.

Union honorary president P.Venkat Reddy said that the GO No.279 was issued to hand over sanitation work to big contractors and threatened that the workers would resort to indefinite strike if it is not withdrawn. Sanitation, water supply, lightning and park workers, drivers and outsourcing and contract workers participated in the dharna.

Venkat Reddy said that the strength of the cadre was decided when the population was four lakhs and the extent of the city was 110 sq.km. Now, the city was spread over 600 sq.km and population was 20 lakhs but the number came down to 3,400 from 4,000. He reminded that the GVMC bagged third place in All India cleanliness survey only because of the efforts of the workers.
