President Ram Nath Kovind will declare open the Centre for Defence Studies at Andhra University on Thursday.

The establishing of an exclusive and first-of-its-kind Centre for Defence Studies at a public university has been on the cards since long as AU has been negotiating with the senior administrators at the tri-services.

According to the VC, the centre will be set up with an investment of about Rs.60 crore from the Ministry of Defence, and will exclusively cater to the education and research needs of the defence sector. The centre will primarily bring all the courses that AU has been running for the Navy, Airforce and Army under one roof.

A set of 237 courses were sanctioned by the Director-General of Resettlement, and all these and the ones that had been opened and on which there was a collaboration with the Navy and the Air Force would now be offered by the Centre said Vice Chancellor G.Nageswara Rao. This apart, the centre will function as an R&D centre for the defence sector and talks are on to start research in the areas of cyber security, nanotechnology, corrosion and electro magnetic devices.

Meanwhile, the police are making tight security for the President’s visit. He will arrive here on Thursday and will be travelling about 100 km by road during the two day tour. On Thursday, bomb disposal squad and dog squad members were seen checking every nook and corner of the roads on which the presidential convoy is scheduled to move. Apart from manpower, each venue has been scanned by the Bomb Disposal squad and door frame metal detectors have been installed.

Traffic restrictions and diversions are in place in the city from Thursday. ADCP (Traffic) Mahendra Patrudu called upon the motorists to cooperate with the police in ensuring smooth flow of traffic.
