  • Sports day at MVGR:: Students took part in the 21st annual sports day celebrations held at MVGR College of Engineering today. Former Indian cricketer Y.Venugoplala Rao who was the chief guest suggested students to give equal importance to sports and academics. Later, he gave away prizes to winners of various sports events.
  • Hundi collection:: Sri Sampath Vinayaka temple at Siripuram in the city recorded a hundi collection of Rs.12.52 lakh in 25 days. Apart from the currency, the temple receive 3.5 grams of gold and over 185 grams of silver according to S.J.Madhavi, Executive Officer.
  • Three get two year jail term in Central Bank fraud:: Three persons including an official of the Central Bank of India were convicted and sentenced to undergo two years of rigorous imprisonment in a bank fraud case by Second Additional Special Judge for CBI cases. According to a CBI release, M.Peddi Raju, the then Deputy Zonal Manager of Central Bank of India, Hyderabad abused his official position and entered in to criminal conspiracy with Ch.Raghu Ram and K.Srinivasan Venkatesan managing director (finance) respectively of Kirlampudi Sugar Mills Pvt.Ltd., Pithapuram of East Godavari district and Raju fraudulently sanctioned two term loans and cash credit limits to the firms in 2003-04. The term loans and cash credit limits were sanctioned on forged and fabricated invoices issued by fictitious companies. As a result, the bank has suffered a huge loss to the tune of Rs.3.36 crore.
  • 11.4 tonnes of seized ganja destroyed:: District police today destroyed over 11.4 tonnes of dry ganja at the Kapulaupada dumping yard. The value of the ganja burnt was around Rs.6 crores. The seized ganja was destroyed. Disposal committee chairman and DIG Visakha Range Ch.Srikanth said there are about 1,100 ganja cases in the district in which about 1.5 lakh kgs of seized ganja has been lying at various police station limits.
  • Modern refresh lounge at railway station soon:: The Visakha Refinery of Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited will provide a modern refresh lounge with toilet block at Visakhapatnam Railway station. A Memorandum of Understanding was signed by the DRM Mukul Saran Mathur and General Manager (in-charge) HR, HPCL Narisetty Raja Rao today. HPCL extended cooperation to provide a modern refresh lounge system at a cost of Rs.49.51 lakh.
  • SRM invites applications for admissions:: SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Kattankulathur is inviting applications for admissions into various courses it offers. Candidates must have completed secondary examinations to apply for the UG programme and the minimum age of candidates should be 16 years and above. Those who apply for MBA programme, the institution will offer two-year-long programme with practical training and info sessions followed by internship.
